Overview

The opportunity

The scale of NHS Commercial activity at national, regional and local levels across England is significant, with around £35 billion spent across over 80,000 suppliers. This covers all supplier-related activity, including procurement of products and services, commercial innovation and supply chain management.

P4H England will provide a unique opportunity to drill down into the detail of the Strategic framework for NHS Commercial released last November, which set out a clear strategic direction across key commercial capabilities in managing key supply markets and suppliers, commercial arrangements with suppliers, as well as looking at unnecessary cost and waste, and missed opportunities to drive additional value and leverage scale.

Investment:

Government investment in health is expected to increase over the coming years. The Autumn Statement last year reaffirmed the commitment made in the Autumn Statement of 2022 that up to up to £8 billion of additional funding will be made available to provide additional support to the NHS and adult social care in England in 2024-25.

This resulted in a total NHS budget of £162.5 billion for 2024-25 in England, 45% higher than 2018-19 in cash terms.

This includes £3.3 billion to respond to the significant pressures facing the NHS, enabling rapid action to improve emergency, elective and primary care performance, and introducing reforms to support the workforce and improve performance across the health system over the longer term.

The Statement also announced up to £4.7 billion in 2024-25 to put the adult social care system in England on a stronger financial footing and improve the quality of and access to care for many of the most vulnerable in our society. This includes £1 billion to directly support discharges from hospital into the community, to support the NHS.

In October last year, the government also invited Integrated Care Systems to apply for a share of £30 million to roll out innovative technology that could help cut waiting lists, speed up diagnosis and deliver new and improved ways to treat patients.

This investment is set against a backdrop of net zero, digitisation, social value and supply chain diversity: creating a vibrant environment for new approaches and innovations to prosper.
